Behind the scenes in making of Love’s Sorrow
by Terri Rochenski
What a loaded topic! I’ll try to keep this short…
Love’s Sorrow began as Anne over ten years ago when I lived in Baltimore and had the pleasure of visiting with the lovely Anne Tyler on a weekly basis. When I confessed to always dreaming of being a writer she encouraged me to purse it. A few weeks later, my voice shaking, I asked if she would like to read the first chapter of a story brewing in my mind.
She agreed, and that began a year-long mentorship with me gleaning every tidbit of wisdom I could from a woman who had gone before me with failures and major successes alike.
Once my manuscript was completed, Ms. Tyler offered to write letters of introduction to a few agents. In all my novice, publishing world ignorance, I expected to be picked up with little to no rejection.
A big surprise lay in store for me.
No one found interest in the 130k-ish historical romance full of passive telling from beginning to end. Of course, at the time I had no clue what either term meant, and thought the agents didn’t know what they were talking about.
Years passed before I realized the truth.
Six moves. One divorce. Growing up. Finding love again. Three children. Years of critique groups. Years of swallowing my pride and listening rather than strutting around like a peacock thinking I was somebody.
A half-dozen publications later, I know that I still have a lot to learn, but I recognize I am simply Terri Rochenski, farm girl, wife, mommy, and chaser of dreams.
I shelved Anne during those years, never thinking I would dust it off for a sixty-eighth time.
This January, my muse had nothing going on—NADA—and I figured what the heck. I pulled out the CD Anne snoozed on, and downloaded the pile of crappola I had at one time thought a master piece.
What a joke.
The storyline itself had potential, I thought, so why not? On a whim, I pitched Anne to Roane Publishing as a series rather than a mammoth single novel, and scrambled to rewrite and polish the first 100 pages.
“I want. Please and thank you.”
Made my day AND made my schedule hectic as could be. Why? I agreed to an April release which meant I had all of three weeks to rewrite the entire first half of the manuscript.

Hired as a nanny for her cousin’s children, Anne Tearle finds security and a loving family. The children are a dream, but London society is a world of its own, one where a displaced farm girl has no business being. But, wealthy rake, Gavin MacKay, helps her to see associating with the upper class might not be as horrid as she first assumed.
Like all things worthwhile, love comes at a price, and the cost soon bestows more anguish than joy. Lost, but not undone, Anne must find the courage to begin life anew, or succumb to sorrow's unrelenting waves of grief.

Terri started writing stories in the 8th grade, when a little gnome whispered in her brain. Gundi’s Great Adventure never hit the best seller list, but it started a long love affair with storytelling.
Today she enjoys an escape to Middle Earth during the rare ‘me’ moments her three young children allow. When not playing toys, picking them back up, or kissing boo-boos, she can be found sprawled on the couch with a book or pencil in hand, and toothpicks propping her eyelids open.
