FIRST KISS from: TWILIGHT OVER MOLDAVIA
BY STEPHANIE BURKHART

Stefan came to a secret door and opened it. It led out into the gardens near the gardenias. Gas lamps lit the walking path. He directed Caroline away from the lights of the ballroom to a small bench next to the roses and sat beside her. He took both of her hands in his and gazed into her eyes.

"I saw a man in town several days ago. He accosted me."

Concern grew on her face. "What did he want?"

"He scratched me and licked my blood."

"How awful."

"He told me I was 'pure.' The same man confronted me two years ago when we were promised to each other in Ploesti."

She crossed her arms. "What did he look like?"

"He had yellow eyes. I described his appearance to my father. He said the man is a werewolf."

"A werewolf is after you?" Her voice broke with apprehension.

"I hate to believe it, but I cannot ignore the evidence."

"What did your father say when you told him?"

"He needs more information, but he's convinced the man who attacked me is a wolf." Caroline stood and turned her face toward the sky. Stefan stepped up behind her and
placed his hands on her shoulders. "I sense worry and fear in you."

"Of course I'm worried."

"For me?"

She turned to face him. "Yes. I wasn't quite expecting this upon our engagement. I thought my intended would tell me how he looked forward to seeing me in person, how absence had made his heart grow fonder, not that he might be hunted by a werewolf."

He curved his fingers around her chin and met her gaze, praying he could drive away her apprehension. "I'm sorry. I wanted to be honest with you. Absence has made my heart grow fonder."

She bit her lower lip and grew silent. Stefan sensed her conflicted emotions. She truly did care for him, but concern tumbled next to her happiness at seeing him again. And he had to talk about werewolves first and not how glad he was to see her again. How clumsy of him.

"Forgive me. I am delighted to see you in person again. You're wearing my necklace."

"I am." Her cheeks reddened. "Do you still have my scarf?"

"It's in my vest pocket. I keep it close to me at all times."

"That warms my heart."

He trailed his fingers down her neck and rested them on her shoulder. Oh, how he could get lost in her sparkling blue eyes. "I'm sorry, but we must speak of the creature."

She nodded.

"He poses a real danger to me. Do you want to postpone our engagement? I can talk to our fathers."
She drew in a deep breath, turned away, and stared at the moon.

"Caroline?" he prompted.

After a moment, she turned to face him, courage glistening in her eyes. "No, don't talk to
our fathers. Whatever threat the werewolf poses, I'll face it with you."

"Thank you." He wrapped his arms around her. "I do not want to break our engagement."
"No?"

He pulled back only far enough to look into her eyes. "I like the woman I've gotten to
know through the runes. I love your sense of adventure. We have a lot in common, including witchcraft. I feel like I can tell you anything."
She nipped at her lower lip, and the energy between them surged. He tilted his head and drew her close, their mouths awkwardly skirting each other. Her breath, warm and hinting of apricots from the wine she had sipped earlier, ghosted over his cheek. Their lips brushed, and his pulse spiked. Gently, he continued to kiss her with hesitant exploration. She was the first woman he had ever kissed, and her lips were everything he had expected -- and more.

He placed his hands on her waist and tugged her close, pressing her against the length of his body. She put her hands on his shoulders and trailed her fingers along the nape of his neck.

Stefan groaned and increased the intensity of the kiss. Fueled by their mutual desire, his manhood grew hard. He hadn't known that feeling before. He could lose his head to it.

Sounds like lots of European werewolf lore in this one! Legends and lore are endlessly fascinating. :-)

As for addictions to coffee and chocolate.... I think there's a law mandating all writers be addicted to those substances. I know I am! :-D

I'm assuming their engagement and marriage is arranged just from their responses to each other. Even though the hero is starts off with the threat to him by a werewolf instead of the love talk his betrothed espected, I admired his forthrightness in telling her about the danger. He gave her a chance to change her mind. It's actually a very romantic scene.
I've read several of your books and enjoyed them thoroughly. Your real life adventures in Europe really helps bring a richness to your stories.
All the best you, Stephanie. I wish you continued success.

Cathy,
Jenifier Ranieri is the cover artist. She really has a good "eye" when it comes to covers.

Katrina,
I figured you couldn't get more "paranormal" than Romania, where the book is set.

Sarah,
You nailed it. It's an arranged marriage. Stefan is very upfront and honest. It's almost his undoing. Thank you so much for reading and enjoying my stories. I've read several of yours and I've enjoyed them, too. Especially "The Violin."

Jacqueline,
Thank you much.

Well, I'm pretty adventurous, but I'm not so sure I'd risk marrying a possibly soon-to-be werewolf! Nice excerpt. :-)

Margaret Tanner said... Best Blogger Tips

Hi Steph,
That excerpt was amazing. Mm marrying a "maybe" werewolf, I am not so sure I could do that, but it sure gives an interesting slant on the story.

Regards

Margaret

You know I love this series. If a man who I loved told me this, I would fight by his side! Love is more important than any threat.

Thanks Stephanie!

@Debra St. John Thanks for stopping by. There's a lot of "classic" elements in the story - dark spooky country and a devilish villian.

What country is Moldavia based upon?
